Hans Jürgen Massaquoi wurde 1926 in Hamburg als Sohn einer weißen Mutter und eines schwarzen Vaters geboren. Der Großvater, ehemaliger König der Vai, war liberianischer Generalkonsul in Hamburg, die Dienstboten waren Weiße. Als die liberianische Familie das Land verließ, blieb der Junge mit seiner deutschen Mutter zurück. 1948 verließ Hans J. Massaquoi Deutschland. Er reiste nach Liberia, 1950 zog es ihn in die USA. Nach dem Studium der Publizistik und Kommunikations-wissenschaft Mitarbeit bei Ebony, der größten afroamerikanischen Zeitschrift, deren Chefredakteur er wurde. Er lebt heute mit seiner Frau in Florida, USA.
