Der für sein photorealistisches Artwork bekannte Künstler Nelson Alexander Ross kam am 22.01.1970 in Portland zur Welt. Seine erste publizierte Arbeit ist die 1990 erschienene Miniserie Terminator: The Burning Earth. 1993 folgte sein erster Auftrag für ein Superheldengemälde - das Cover, das für den DCRoman Superman: Doomsday & Beyond verwendet wurde. Zu dieser Zeit lernte er Kurt Busiek kennen, mit dem er ein Epos konzipierte, das die Geschichte des Marvel-Universums aus der Sicht eines Alltagsmenschen erzählt. Der Verlag griff freudig zu und Marvels war geschaffen. Ein Meilenstein, der neben zahlreichen Titelbildern noch viele weitere Meisterwerke nach sich zog, darunter Earth X, Universe X und Paradise X für Marvel sowie Kingdom Come für DC.
