Since 1923 the Sammlung Tusculum has published authoritative editions of Greek and Latin works together with a German translation. The original texts are comprehensively annotated, and feature an introductory chapter. In the new volumes, additional essays delve into specific aspects of the works, illuminating their historical context and reception to the present day. Autoreninfo

Gaius Plinius Secundus Maior (23/24-79 nr.), kurz Plinius der Ältere genannt, war römischer Offizier und Staatsbeamter von ritterlichem Stand, zugleich aber auch ein bedeutender Historiker und Gelehrter. Die Karriere des römischen Ritters führte ihn nach Germanien und später an den Hof der Kaiser Vespasian und Titus. Berühmt wurde Plinius jedoch durch sein monumentales naturwissenschaftliches Werk Naturalis historia in 37 Büchern.
