A suggestion by the Task Group on Assessment and Teaching Group (TGAT) in 1987 that "assessment should be an integral part of the education process, continuously providing both feedback and feedforward" was the beginning of more recent reforms. The formative purpose of assessment is that the current achievement of a student can be recognised, discussed and the next steps planned. This book provides a snapshot of how a group of primary school students (ages 7-10) understand feedback they receive and to what extent this matches what the teacher intended. A feedback typology was used to map the different types of feedback. The results of this study should help teachers and their students as they work together as partners in teaching and learning. It should also assist principals and senior management teams identify aspects of effective teaching that may need further support or development in their school.
