Recent remarkable changes in computing andcommunication environment including increases in thenumber of machines per person and easy access tointerconnection networks have encouraged people toretrieve information with whatever they have(machines), wherever they are (network availability). For information retrieval applications that oftenserve a fairly large client population, push-baseddata dissemination is preferable, with which dataitems are delivered to clients via broadcast withoutexplicit data requests from the clients. This bookexplains why push-based dissemination is attractive, lists what type of methods should be developed tofacilitate it, and illustrates where the performance(e.g., response time, energy efficiency) tuning canbe done. In terms of network types, not only a closednetwork case like satellite networks but also an opennetwork case like wireless sensor networks areconsidered. This book should be useful toprofessionals in computer communications, or anyoneelse who may be considering next-generation businesspowered by various types of wireless networks fromtelevision broadcast networks to wireless ad hocsensor networks.
